The Government of Ghana has expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the Sahel region following coordinated terrorist attacks in Mali that left several people dead, including the country’s Minister of Defence, General Sadio Camara.
The attacks, which occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2026, targeted multiple military positions, including locations in the capital, Bamako. The incident also resulted in the deaths of military personnel and civilians, raising fresh concerns about the growing threat of violent extremism in the region.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana expresses concern over the escalating security situation in the Sahel region, particularly the most recent coordinated terrorist attacks carried out on Saturday, April 25, 2026, on several military positions in Mali, including the capital, Bamako,” the statement said.
Ghana further extended its condolences to the government and people of Mali, describing the development as a tragic turn of events. It also wished those injured in the attacks a speedy recovery.
The government emphasised the need for stronger global cooperation to combat terrorism, stressing that violent extremism should not be tolerated anywhere in the world.
“Violent extremism must have no place in our world, and we must step up collective efforts to end this horror,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Ghanaians currently residing in Mali have been advised to exercise caution and reduce non-essential movement as authorities work to stabilise the situation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged Ghanaian nationals to maintain regular contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Bamako to ensure their safety and receive timely updates.
“Ghanaians living in the jurisdiction are advised to exercise caution and limit non-essential movements. We urge you all to maintain regular contact with the Embassy of Ghana in Bamako,” the release stated.
In addition, Ghanaian traders and drivers who travel along the Mali route for business activities have been directed to suspend their movements until further notice due to the security risks.
The government indicated that it is working closely with Malian authorities to monitor the situation and will provide updates when it is safe to resume trading activities.
“As the Government of Mali takes necessary actions to control the situation, Ghanaian traders and drivers who ply the route for trading activities are advised to suspend movements until further notice,” it said.
Reaffirming its support, the Government of Ghana assured both Mali and Ghanaian nationals of its continued commitment to safety and security during this period of uncertainty.
“The Government of Ghana reiterates its solidarity with the Government of Mali and assures Ghanaian nationals that their security, safety and well-being remain paramount,” the statement concluded.
