Ghana ranks second timber exporter to the EU market

Ghana is the first in Africa and second in the World after Indonesia to export timber to the European Union, (EU) market by the close of this year.

EU ambassador to Ghana Diana Acconcia who announced this in Kumasi said the EU delegation is in Ghana for the final assessment and subsequent signing of the agreement.

The EU ambassador who is touring some mining and forest reserves in the Ashanti region with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Kwaku Asumah-Cheremeh said it is the policy of the EU to ensure that timber exported to it market are coming from sustainable sources.

She said for the past ten the EU has been working with Ghana to meet all it criteria and was hopeful that the final assessment will lead to the signing of the agreement. Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission John Allotey said a lot of work has gone into criteria set by the EU.

He said per the assessment of the commission it has met all the EU standard and hopefully the agreement will be ratify by the close of this year.
