President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the newly commissioned PET scan facility in Accra will be covered under the Mahama Care Fund to support cancer diagnosis and treatment in Ghana.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, President Mahama said the facility will be designated as a recognised oncology centre under the fund.
He explained that once the integration process is completed, patients receiving treatment at the centre will be eligible for financial support through the Mahama Care Fund.
According to the President, the initiative is intended to reduce the financial burden on cancer patients and their families, many of whom face significant costs in accessing specialised treatment.
He noted that the inclusion of the PET scan facility forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and expand access to advanced medical services.
President Mahama said the PET scan technology will improve the early detection, diagnosis and monitoring of cancer, which is expected to lead to better treatment outcomes and improved survival rates.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in modern healthcare infrastructure to ensure that critical services are available locally and accessible to all Ghanaians.
The President described the commissioning of the facility as a major milestone in Ghana’s fight against cancer and a significant step towards improving specialised healthcare delivery in the country.
