American sprinter Trayvon Bromell has claimed the title of the fastest man in the world this year after delivering an exceptional performance at the Rome leg of the Diamond League circuit. Bromell clocked an impressive 9.84 seconds in the men’s 100 metres, surpassing the previous record held by Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, who had set a mark of 9.86 seconds. The American’s outstanding run has now etched his name in the record books as the fastest man in the men’s category for the season.
The race was highly competitive, with Bromell powering past a strong field to secure victory. Notably, American Kenny Bednarek, who had previously tied Saminu’s record of 9.86 seconds at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia, was unable to defend his position. Bromell’s performance demonstrated his dominance and sets the stage for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for September, where he is expected to be a top contender.

In addition to Bromell’s triumph, the race featured several other talented sprinters. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme finished second with a time of 9.99 seconds, while Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala came third, setting a personal best of 10.01 seconds. The race highlighted intense global competition, with Omanyala’s speed and precision drawing particular praise.
Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, the former record holder, was among those reacting to Bromell’s new record. Saminu, who appeared visibly disappointed, remains a significant figure in African sprinting. His earlier record had marked a historic achievement for Ghana.
Meanwhile, Fred Kerley, the 2022 World Champion, placed fifth with a time of 10.06 seconds, underscoring the high level of competition among the world’s elite sprinters.
Bromell’s victory not only cements his status as the world’s fastest man this year but also boosts his confidence ahead of the Tokyo championship, where he is now widely regarded as a favourite for gold.
