The Daily Graphic says malfunctioning traffic lights in the city of Accra have made it increasingly difficult to use the roads. It cites the case of pedestrians, especially school children, who have to wait endlessly, to cross the road, sometimes at the peril of their lives. The paper says most knock downs of pedestrians occur at intersections because of conflict in decision making. It quotes figures from the MTTD which indicate that 1,196 knockdowns occurred in Accra out of which 238 of the victims died. The Graphic thinks it is needless to lose lives through such avoidable means. It therefore calls on the authorities to review their work process and address the challenges which include power trips and surges, stealing of cables and dumping of refuse into the controllers.
The Ghanaian Times adds it voice to calls by President Akufo-Addo for banks and financial institutions to reduce their lending rates to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. The paper says whiles government has kept its side of the bargain by ensuring fiscal discipline in transforming the economy, the banks and financial institutions have still not brought down their lending rates. This, the paper says, has resulted in high borrowing rates which do not augur well for the economy of the country. The Times therefore hopes the banks will listen to the President and do the needful to bring comfort to individuals and businesses through lower lending rates.
