The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, and two other Doctors following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

The child, one of the twin sons of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband Ivara Esege, died on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, after a brief illness.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Adichie alleged medical negligence in the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

She said her son was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line after initially developing what was believed to be a common cold, which later “turned into a very serious infection”.

According to her account, Nkanu was sedated for the procedure but was not properly monitored after receiving propofol. She said this led to complications, including loss of responsiveness, seizures and cardiac arrest.

“He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on 6 January,” she stated.

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was subsequently constituted to examine the case.

Following its investigation, the panel suspended Dr Majekodunmi, the hospital’s anaesthesiologist Dr Titus Ogundare, and the chief medical officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr Atinuke Uwajeh.

The three doctors have been barred from practising medicine in Nigeria pending the determination of their cases by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The panel also found a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors, including Dr Adeseye Akinsete, Dr Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr Anthony Ajeh, Dr Amarachi Bayo, Dr Nkechi Peji, Dr Olaoye Oludare, Dr Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr Patricia Akintan, Dr Babatunde Bamgboye and Dr Raji Faidat.

Eight other doctors were cleared of any wrongdoing.

The decisions followed a review of complaints against 21 doctors, as well as consideration of their counter-affidavits and oral depositions under oath.

The investigation concluded during the panel’s 25th session in Abuja on 17 and 18 February 2026.
