UEW closed down following violent demonstration by students

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has been closed down for the next one week.

This follows the Central Regional Minister’s visit with some state officials to assess the situation on the university campus after the police fired tear gas and water cannons on some students demonstrating on campus.

Speaking in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, a Senior Lecturer at the UEW, Dr. Vincent  Adzahlie Mensah said the students have been asked to leave campus.

In connection with the UEW saga, a media briefing has been held at Winneba.

Speaking at the briefing, the Central Regional Minister, Kwamina Duncan who is also the Head of the Regional Security Council said the closure of the school will bring peace and tranquility to the UEW campus whilst the stakeholders find lasting solution to the agitations.

Demonstration on campus

The students are demanding the return of a number of dismissed lecturers and the immediate dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni.

The Junior Common Room, the windscreen of the Students Representative Council bus and a notice board have all been damaged.
