British police have arrested two suspects following a targeted arson attack on a Jewish volunteer rescue organization. The incident occurred early Monday morning, March 23, 2026, in the heart of Golders Green. This neighborhood serves as the center for London’s largest Jewish and Orthodox Jewish community.

Arrests Made in Suspected Hate Crime

London’s Metropolitan Police took two men, aged 45 and 47, into custody at separate London addresses on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Both individuals face allegations of arson with intent to endanger life. While the suspects remain in police custody, investigators are searching two properties in North London. This follows security camera footage that showed three masked individuals approaching the vehicles at approximately 1:36 a.m. GMT Monday.

Flames and Explosions Disrupt Golders Green

The attack targeted ambulances parked outside the Machzikei Hadath synagogue on Highfield Road. The vehicles belonged to Hatzola Northwest, a volunteer-led charity providing emergency care to all residents regardless of faith. Local resident Charlie Richards told the media she heard “multiple explosions.” Witnesses observed footage of a large orange explosion as dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene. These blasts were attributed to oxygen cylinders and gas canisters on board the vehicles. Simon Lester, a first responder, noted that because the ambulances carry oxygen, they are prone to explode when set on fire.

Targeted Attack on Life Saving Services

Hatzola Northwest chairman Shloimie Richman confirmed that four of the organization’s six ambulances were destroyed. He stated the vehicles were “deliberately targeted in an arson attack.” Richman told reporters, “Obviously we have concerns that this is a direct

attack on the Jewish community.” He added that the organization had received no prior threats. Each vehicle is valued at approximately £125,000 (1,832,500 GHS).

Antisemitic Intent Behind the Attack

The Metropolitan Police are treating the destruction as an “antisemitic hate crime.” Although the incident has not yet been deemed a terrorist act, the Counter Terrorism Command is leading the investigation. Commander Helen Flanagan stated, “We fully recognise the local community will still be concerned and our investigation very much remains active and we will continue to work to identify and seek to arrest all of those who may have been involved.” An Islamist group, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, allegedly claimed responsibility via Telegram. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said establishing the authenticity of this claim is a priority for the investigation team. The Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green, Sarah Sackman, called for the perpetrators of the “despicable, cowardly, antisemitic arson attack” to feel “the full force of the law.”

Community Resilience and Rapid Response

Gedale Weinberg and Anita Zadeh, who live nearby, could smell the smoke from their living room. “It’s a terrible, terrible act what happened… Why is it happening to us?” Weinberg told the media. Laurence Blitz, speaking for Hatzola, called the event “shocking in the extreme” but confirmed their service continues unbroken. Justice Minister Sarah Sackman stated the “perpetrators must feel the full force of the law.” Health Secretary Wes Streeting pledged that the British government will replace the four ambulances.

Rising Hostility

The number of antisemitic incidents reported in Britain has surged since the Israel-Hamas war began in late 2023. The Community Security Trust (CST) recorded 3,700 incidents last year, a significant increase from 1,662 in 2022. This trend follows a deadly October attack in Manchester, where a car-ramming and stabbing at a synagogue killed two people and injured three others in a declared act of terrorism.

Government Response and Legislative Action

The UK government has maintained the Jewish Community Protective Security Grant at a record £28 million (410,480,000 GHS). This funding supports the work of the Community Security Trust (CST) in providing extra precautions for Jewish institutions. Additionally, MI5 and the police are mounting a round-the-clock national security effort to disrupt plots. The Home Secretary has also commissioned a review of public order laws to keep hate and intimidation off the streets.

National and International Condemnation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed “disgust at this horrific antisemitic attack.” He called it an attack on “fundamental British values of tolerance and respect.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis stated on X, “Our Hatzola volunteer ambulance corps is an extraordinary service, whose sole mission is to protect life, Jewish and non-Jewish alike.” Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, noted the attack comes amid a global rise in antisemitism. The Community Security Trust (CST) confirmed that antisemitic incidents reached record levels in 2023.

Enhanced Security Ahead of Passover

In response to the attack, the Metropolitan Police have launched a bespoke policing plan and increased patrols in Golders Green to ensure the community can live, pray, and thrive in safety. About 15,000 people live in Golders Green, half of whom are Jewish, according to 2021 census data. This strategy includes highly visible firearms patrols around vulnerable locations, serving as a deterrent as residents prepare for the upcoming Passover holiday. Detective Chief Superintendent Williams emphasized that while these are “scary times” for residents like Gedale Weinberg and Anita Zadeh, who previously noted the need for more police in this central Jewish hub—the increased presence is a necessary precautionary step.
