The Minority Caucus of Ghana’s Parliament has donated GH₵100,000 in cash to the Black Queens in recognition of their outstanding performance and third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held in Morocco.
The donation, announced by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marks the caucus’s public acknowledgment and support of the national women’s football team’s achievements.
The Black Queens secured the bronze medal after a thrilling 4-3 victory on penalties against South Africa in the tournament’s third-place playoff match.
The game ended 1-1 in regulation time, with Ghana’s Alice Kusi scoring the equalizer before goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan made crucial saves in the shootout.
This bronze medal finish marks Ghana’s first WAFCON podium placement in nearly a decade, signaling a resurgence in the team’s continental competitiveness and a hopeful future for women’s football in the country.
In a statement on the floor of Parliament, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin expressed pride in being the first to publicly support the Black Queens financially for their industrious effort.
“We’re humble but proud to say we are the first to publicly acknowledge the industry of the Black Queens by donating GH₵100,000 in cash to them,” he said during the team’s special visit to Parliament on July 29, 2025.
The donation complements the widespread national acclaim following the Black Queens’ achievement, including a hero’s welcome by fans and officials upon their return to Ghana on July 28.
The Black Queens’ bronze medal at WAFCON 2024 reaffirms Ghana’s position as a continental football power and inspires optimism for further progress.
The Minority Caucus’s contribution stands as a tangible commitment to supporting this journey, encouraging the team to continue their quest for excellence on the African stage and beyond.
