A total of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in street begging have been rounded up in a major operation in Accra conducted by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). The group includes 909 adults and 1,332 children.
The exercise began in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, at Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, and the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Officers were seen engaging with the individuals before relocating them from pavements and intersections where they are often found begging for alms.
According to sources within the Ghana Immigration Service, measures are being put in place to repatriate them after their identities are confirmed.
The street beggars have become a national security threat, drawing the attention of Immigration authorities.
Several women and children, suspected to be foreign nationals, were picked up and transported in an immigration vehicle to an assembly point.
