Reverend Donald Owusu Nti, Executive Director of the Alliance of Hope Africa and a Ghanaian living abroad, has demonstrated unwavering patriotism by choosing to pay his TV license fee despite not residing in Ghana.
This was after the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation began the nationwide campaign to ensure Ghanaians fulfill their civic duty by paying the tv license fee amounting to 36 Ghana Cedis for a TV set and 60 Ghana Cedis for two or more TV sets for a year. This campaign is to help reset the Corporation while providing the best content for consumers.
Rev. Owusu Nti’s actions serve as a shining example to fellow Ghanaians in the diaspora, demonstrating that one’s love and commitment to their homeland transcend geographical boundaries.
Speaking in an interview with him on Thursday October 9, 2025 , Rev. Owusu-Nti revealed his motivation to pay the TV license stemmed from a sense of civic responsibility, recognizing that contributing to Ghana’s growth and development is not limited to financial remittances or property investments. He believes by paying his TV license fee, he is actively supporting the advancement of Ghana’s broadcasting industry, which is crucial for promoting the country’s culture, history, and values.
“I strongly believe being a Ghanaian goes beyond just living in Ghana because if those in the diaspora can build our businesses back home which is important to us, then our civic responsibility must equally be as important”, he reiterated.
To him, the mere fact that he could be a part of the advancement and development of his nation gave him a sure feeling of connection to his motherland.
“When you see our systems advancing, the growth of our nation and you can say that you contributed in that growth, there’s a sure feeling of connection there”.
One of the key takeaways from Rev. Owusu Nti’s experience is the payment method which he described as “very easy”. I’m his words, “the most easiest online payment I’ve ever made because when I dialed the code, it was systematic so I just followed the instructions and I was good to go”. He also clarified that the amount paid in Ghana is the same amount anyone anywhere would be tasked to pay.
According to him, he encountered no challenges. He just had to dial the short code which is *447*333# and paid 60 cedis due to the fact that he has three TV sets back home in Ghana.
This convenience he believes should encourage more Ghanaians abroad to follow suit in fulfilling their civic duty. He urged fellow Ghanaians in the diaspora to be part of the exercise to fulfill their civic duty while contributing to the advancement of Ghana.
Rev. Owusu Nti also pleaded with Ghanaians in Ghana refusing to pay their tv license to do the needful.
Citing the European Champions league matches, he explained that, the national broadcaster would only be able to broadcast such matches and quality content of well resourced hence the need for the tv license payment.
However, Rev. Owusu Nti’s story also highlights a pressing issue that needs attention. He aptly pointed out that the laws governing TV license payment in Ghana need to be enforced more strictly, particularly for those who willfully evade payment. This lack of enforcement not only deprives the state of revenue but also undermines the spirit of patriotism and civic responsibility.
He made mention of the serious intolerance of tax evasion in the diaspora urging Ghana to enforce its laws and criminalize defaulters.
According to him, “If we are able to resource and encourage our own, we can also be up there to compete with the others.” His statement underscores the importance of investing in Ghana’s broadcasting industry, which is essential for promoting the country’s interests and showcasing its rich cultural heritage to the world.
Concluding, Rev. Donald Owusu Nti’s decision to pay his TV license fee is a beacon of patriotism that should inspire fellow Ghanaians abroad to follow suit. By contributing to Ghana’s growth and development, we can take pride in our nation’s progress and advancement. Citing quotations from the Bible specifically from the books of Romans and Jeremiah, he explained that we have been mandated to “seek the welfare of the city” we find ourselves in, so we ought to do the needful and pay our TV license fees, thereby supporting the development of our beloved homeland.
