The Regional chapter of Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions have raised a red flag over how the ¢4 million government entrepreneurial support for PWDs was initiated and disbursed to some PWDs in the country.
According to them, none of their members in the three regions have so far benefited from the said ¢4 million entrepreneurial package. They therefore want the government to come clear on the criteria used in choosing beneficiaries.
They made this known at a press conference in Sunyani.
The Government of Ghana on May 1, and July 24, this year presented two cheques amounting to four million Ghana Cedis under the President’s Entrepreneurial Support for PWDs across the country at the Jubilee house in Accra.
Addressing the Press in Sunyani, the Vice President of the Bono regional chapter of the PWDs, Miss Sirina Mahamadu, said none of their members in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions have so far benefited from the package, thus they want the government to come clear on the criteria used to select beneficiaries.
On other matters, Miss Sirina Mahamadu said PWDs are being discriminated against in many sectors. She said for instance they are routinely refused driving and riding licenses by the DVLA, while the EC failed to recruit PWDs as officers for the ongoing voters registration exercise even though many applied.
She further revealed that, the guidelines to the Ministry of Local Government to allocate one seat to the disabled in the MMDAs/DA were not honored. Miss Sirina Mahamadu, however, thanked President Akufo-Addo and his government for remembering PWDs in the country by giving them the three percent of the Common Fund for PWDs.
The Public Relations Officer of Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations for the Bono region, Mr Isaac Yeboah Afari on his part demanded inclusion of PWDs in national matters that involved them.
