The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, says about 4,732 Ghanaians have so far received support under the National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS), which was rolled out on January 31, 2023, in Accra.
The initiative was introduced as a pilot programme covering six regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Bono East and Northern.
The minister described the scheme as a success, noting that it provides low-interest loans directly to landlords on behalf of eligible applicants, who then repay the amount in affordable monthly instalments. He said the programme has recorded a 99 per cent recovery rate.
Speaking to the media during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, Mr Adjei said the scheme is easing housing pressures for beneficiaries while ensuring that government funds remain recoverable.
According to him, 2,031 individuals benefited from the scheme in 2025 alone, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 4,732 since its inception.
“At inception, the scheme was advanced seed funding of GH¢27 million, and over time, the principal and interest have rolled over to accrue a total of GH¢71.7 million, meaning the scheme is performing well,” he said, highlighting its financial sustainability.
The minister added that the near-perfect recovery rate demonstrates the scheme’s effectiveness and positions it for a nationwide rollout.
He said the eligibility criteria, application process and success stories of beneficiaries show the programme’s impact in addressing housing needs and improving community well-being, adding that the government plans to scale up the scheme to cover all 16 regions in the short to medium term.
The National Rental Assistance Scheme was officially launched by the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on 31 January 2023 in Accra, with initial seed funding of GH¢30 million for its first phase in the six operational regions.
Within its first year, by January 31, 2024, the scheme had disbursed about GH¢19 million to support 1,492 beneficiaries.
