Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has eulogised the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as an incorruptible, visionary, and empathetic leader who inspired a generation of Ghanaian political figures.

Speaking during the signing of the book of condolence at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, Mr Ablakwa praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to public service, national security, and anti-corruption, calling on African leaders to emulate his firm and principled leadership style.

“President Buhari’s death came to us as a surprise. He was a towering figure in African politics, and his legacy will continue to shape governance on the continent,” Mr Ablakwa said

Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away in London after a period of illness. His remains were flown back to Nigeria and laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites. The former military ruler-turned-democrat had a long and storied career, including serving as Nigeria’s Head of State between 1983 and 1985, before returning to power through democratic elections three decades later.

During his presidency, Buhari was widely recognised for his anti-corruption campaign, efforts to stabilise the Nigerian economy, and his fight against insurgency in the country’s northeast.

Many have extended condolences to Nigeria, recognising Buhari’s role in fostering bilateral relations and regional peace during his time in office.
