Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has refuted claims that Ghana benefited financially or materially from its agreement with the United States to accept some West African deportees.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 15, Mr Ablakwa stressed that the arrangement was not influenced by profit motives.
“Ghana has not received any money, compensation or material gain from this understanding. Our position is based solely on humanitarian considerations and principle,” he said.
His comments come amid growing public criticism following reports that some Nigerian and Gambian nationals had been relocated to Ghana under the agreement, with opposition MPs accusing the government of compromising national sovereignty.
Mr Ablakwa said the arrangement was being managed in line with international humanitarian standards, and assured that the safety and dignity of Ghanaians remained the government’s priority while upholding the country’s obligations to the global community.
