The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend the broadcasting license of DSTV effective August 7, 2025, if the satellite television provider fails to reduce its subscription fees by 30 per cent

Speaking at the ‘Government Accountability Series’ on Friday, August 1, 2025, Communications Minister, Mr Samuel Nartey George, emphasized that his fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people, who he believes have been exploited for too long.

“I wrote back to the NCA on Monday and directed them to suspend DSTV’s broadcasting license if they don’t comply with the price reduction,”Mr Sam George stated.

He cited significant price disparities between Ghana and other countries, stating that Nigerians pay the equivalent of $29 for the same premium bouquet that costs $83 in Ghana.

Mr Sam George questioned the justification provided by DSTV, which attributed its pricing to the Ghanaian cedi’s depreciation over the past eight years. “How can anyone explain this price disparity to me?” he asked, adding that the Nigerian naira had depreciated more significantly than the Ghanaian cedi during the same period.

“We will not allow foreign service providers to take advantage of our citizens under the guise of economic pressures,” Mr Sam George asserted. “If Nigerians are paying the equivalent of $29, DSTV must charge the same here in Ghana or face the consequences.”

The Minister’s directive comes after months of public outcry over DSTV’s pricing, with many subscribers expressing frustration over the recent price hikes.

In April 2025, DSTV increased its subscription prices by roughly 15% across all packages, citing higher taxes, inflation, and cedi depreciation.
