Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the total abolition of the death penalty during a high-level engagement at the Ghana High Commission in London.
She made the remarks when she hosted Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina and Managing Partner of the Death Penalty Project (UK) and F-X Law & Associates (Ghana), who is currently on a working visit to London.
The discussions focused on Ghana’s ongoing collaboration with the Death Penalty Project (UK) and other partners to advance legal reforms and advocacy towards the full abolition of capital punishment, including provisions still applicable under high treason and military offences.
Hon. Sosu, who championed Ghana’s legislative amendment that removed the death penalty for ordinary criminal offences in 2023, was accompanied by Belinda Narkey Quaynor, Esq., Managing Associate of F-X Law & Associates, and Mr. Saul Lehrfreund, Executive Director of the Death Penalty Project.
H.E. Mrs. Benson commended the delegation for their continued human rights advocacy and pledged the High Commission’s full support in advancing Ghana’s global image as a country committed to justice reform and the protection of human dignity.
The High Commissioner later received executives of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) – England, where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation to promote student welfare and address educational challenges facing Ghanaian students across the UK.
Both meetings, according to the High Commission, reflect Ghana’s proactive engagement in human rights diplomacy and its commitment to supporting its citizens abroad.
