The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has instructed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate two individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”

‎In an official letter dated July 15, 2025, the Attorney-General directed EOCO to begin immediate investigations into the suspected illegal mining operations involving Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin. The directive follows increased public concern, media reports, and intelligence pointing to illegal mining activities across the country and violations.

‎The illegal act by these two individuals has led to the breach of the Minerals and Mining Acts

‎“These activities are in direct violation of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended, and pose a serious threat to our water bodies, forest reserves, and local communities,” the Attorney-General stated.

‎He reminded EOCO of President John Dramani Mahama’s strong commitment to ending illegal mining and protecting Ghana’s natural resources. The Attorney-General urged EOCO to act swiftly and thoroughly, in line with its powers under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804).

‎Dr. Ayine also requested EOCO to look into other individuals who may be involved in these unlawful activities and to include findings from the report by Professor Frimpong-Boateng on illegal mining.

‎In addition, EOCO has been asked to invite the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission to assist with the investigations, given the Commission’s oversight responsibilities.
