The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Professor Amin Alhassan, is calling on Muslim organisations to come up with solutions to empower women in the Islamic world. He says priority should also be on girl child education. Professor Alhassan granted audience to some National Executive members of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Accra, Ghana.

Empowering women is one of the most important concerns of the 21st century. It is seen as a critical aspect of achieving gender parity. Worldwide, women empowerment has been an issue of immense discussion and contemplation. There have been national and international initiatives to reduce the disparities among women. This notwithstanding, the empowerment goals are yet to be completely realised globally.

This, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Ghana (FOMWAG), a charity organization, is seeking to achieve. As part of its objectives, the association aims to foster unity among Muslim women, conscientise them about their status and role in Islam and in society. The President of the Association, Hajia Hajara Issaku Telle says the association is more than able and willing to help improve the welfare of women and children, especially girls.

For his part, the Director General of GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan, commended the Association for its efforts in enhancing the public image of Muslim women in Ghana. He assured of the Corporation’s preparedness to collaborate with FOMWAG in ensuring that slots are allocated to the association to champion its cause in helping build homes, as women are the key players in building our home.

Currently, FOMWAG has acquired some land to put up a school to educate girls from preschool to the tertiary level.
