Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced an investigation into the death of Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student who died in Latvia, Europe.
According to the Minister, his office will provide regular updates on the investigation and has assured the public that Ghana will not tolerate harm against its citizens abroad.
“Nobody harms a Ghanaian in any part of the world and gets away with it,” Ablakwa stated in a Facebook post today.
Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia was a first-year Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University and was found dead on June 4, 2025, allegedly after falling from the sixth floor of his apartment building.
However, his family suspects foul play, citing a disturbing voice note he sent three days before his death claiming he had been poisoned by friends. The family also points out inconsistencies in the official report, including the fact that his body was found fully clothed with only a scratch on the forehead and no broken bones, which they argue is inconsistent with a fall from a six-storey building.
