The Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is undergoing construction to expand its runway for the first time in three decades.

The runway expansion, which began in July 2025, includes the installation of an LED Approach Guidance Lighting (AGL) system, a runway overlay, and the rehabilitation of the runway drainage system.

Addressing the media during a runway tour on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said the runway’s lifespan had expired, making repairs and an overlay essential to support ongoing operations.

“The expansion is from 60 metres to 75 metres. When completed, it will be a wider runway than what we currently have. At present, the runway is about 60 metres wide, and this expansion is necessary—even overdue—because of our growing population and increasing air traffic,” she said.

She added that the expansion was critical for future operations and would benefit the country in the long term.

“The number of aircraft and passengers is increasing, so we are expanding for the future. When we undertake projects, we must consider not only today’s needs but also look ahead. Ten years from now, it should still be fit for purpose,” she stated.

The runway expansion project is scheduled for completion by July 2027, with construction ongoing as planned.
