The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Navrongo–Bolgatanga, Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, has described infidelity as a major threat to the stability of the Catholic family, warning that unfaithfulness among spouses is destroying many homes.
Delivering a sermon during a church service at Kongo Catholic Church in the Upper East Region, Bishop Agyenta expressed deep concern over what he called the growing breakdown of trust in marriages. He noted that many husbands and wives are failing to remain faithful to their marriage vows, a situation he said is leading to broken families and emotional trauma for children.
“When people begin to be unfaithful to their wives or husbands, then that’s the beginning of difficulty. This is what we need to know as a Catholic family. The new law teaches us to be faithful and committed,” he explained.
The bishop stressed that marriage is a sacred covenant that must be protected through commitment, sacrifice, and mutual respect. According to him, when couples abandon their responsibilities and engage in extramarital affairs, they not only hurt their partners but also weaken the moral fabric of society.
He urged married couples to renew their commitment to God and to each other, emphasising that strong families are the foundation of a strong Church and nation. Bishop Agyenta also called on the faithful to seek counselling and spiritual guidance when facing marital challenges instead of resorting to actions that could jeopardise their unions.
He appealed to Christian families to uphold fidelity, love, and forgiveness as core values in sustaining lasting marriages.
