President John Dramani Mahama has defended plans to conduct a new SIM card re-registration exercise, describing the previous process as ineffective and lacking credibility.
Speaking during his “Resetting Ghana” tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the President said the earlier exercise failed to produce meaningful results despite the difficulties it created for the public.
He explained that poor coordination between the Ministry of Communications and the National Identification Authority contributed to the failure. According to him, this lack of collaboration prevented proper linking of SIM cards to verified national identity data.
“If you recall, we were asked to re-register our SIM cards, and the process was very challenging. There was a disconnect between the authorities responsible, and in the end, it did not benefit Ghanaians. It was largely ineffective,” he stated.
President Mahama said the new registration exercise will be fully integrated with the Ghana Card system to ensure accurate identification of SIM card users.
He added that the improved system will also allow individuals to update their registration details without the need to queue at registration centres.
The President’s comments come after the National Communications Authority revealed that an audit of SIM registration data between 2021 and 2023 showed zero fingerprint matches when checked against the national identity database. The findings have raised concerns about the credibility of the current SIM registration system.
