Management of Metro mass Transit has denied reports that more than 70 of its buses have been left to rot at its offices in Cape coast. Most of these buses are reported to have broken down and been idle for a long time due to lack of funds to repair them. Our reporter Nathaniel Nartey interacted with the Communications Manager of Metro Mass Transit George krobea Asante after touring the facility in Accra. Although most of the buses in the Accra yard were idle with some visibly not in good shape. Mr. Krobea Asante said the Cape Coast reports are false because that terminal cannot accommodate 70 buses.

“Since the introduction of Metro Mass in the Central Region as a branch, we have never had more than 53 buses; the total allocated buses given to Cape Coast is 53 in number and out of that we have about 23 being active with 30 earmarked for scraps. Within the active fleet we have about 10 of them with major faults and 3 with minor faults… I was even surprised when I heard the 70 because the entire cape coast depo cannot even accommodate over 70 buses”

Mr. Krobea Asante said about 250 of the idle buses have been earmarked as scraps because they have exceeded their durability span.

“As we speak, we are routing close to 200 buses every day. The buses you see parked there are earmarked for scraps. When you go to every branch you see buses earmarked for scraps. Nationwide, we have about 255 buses earmarked for scraps, these are buses with major faults. The buses with major fault are those with engine problems, axle problems and these are old buses, as old as 18 years”.
