President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to build a new runway at Sunyani Airport to allow larger aircraft to operate and improve air travel in the Bono Region.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the President said the current airport infrastructure is not adequate, especially the runway, which is too short to handle jet aircraft.
He explained that the existing runway, measuring about 1.5 kilometres, cannot accommodate planes that are able to land in Kumasi.
This limitation, he noted, has affected air connectivity to the region.
President Mahama said although there were plans to extend the current runway, surrounding buildings have made expansion difficult. As a result, the government has decided to construct a completely new runway.
According to him, traditional authorities in the area have already released land for the project, and designs are ready for a new 2.4-kilometre runway. The new facility is expected to handle larger aircraft and improve access to the region.
He added that the government will return at the appropriate time to officially cut sod for the start of construction.
The project is expected to boost economic activities in the Bono Region by improving transportation and attracting more business opportunities.
