The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to immediately appoint student representatives to its investigative committee to ensure fairness, transparency, and trust in decisions affecting candidates.

In a press statement dated August 24, 2025, NUGS, which represents over 12.5 million Ghanaian students, welcomed the release of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results. The Union congratulated candidates, teachers, parents, and stakeholders for their efforts, while commending WAEC and the Ghana Education Service for the timely release of the results.

However, NUGS expressed deep concern about the continuous absence of student voices in key WAEC decision-making and investigative bodies. According to the Union, both the Ghana Examination Committee, which takes decisions on withheld and cancelled results, and the WAEC Investigative Committee, which probes exam malpractices, exclude student representatives, despite students being the most affected.

“Students deserve a seat at the table where decisions that directly impact their academic futures are made,” NUGS said.

The Union demanded three urgent actions: the inclusion of student representatives on the WAEC Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee, the appointment of students to WAEC’s Investigative Committee, and the creation of a structured framework guaranteeing permanent student participation in national examination-related decision-making.

NUGS stressed that leaving students out of these processes undermines transparency and accountability, warning that trust in Ghana’s examination system depends on inclusiveness.

“We cannot continue to discuss and decide the future of students without the voices of students themselves,” the Union insisted, urging WAEC and the Ministry of Education to act swiftly.
