The Director General of the Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, has stated that the police and the media are two sides of a coin, assuring that the Police remain committed to strengthening their relationship with the media.
“The Police and the media are two sides of the same coin. We have the responsibility to provide security while the media shares stories about our successes and failures in the service of accountability,” she said.
This comes about as a result of the rate of attacks on journalists by security personnel.
Speaking at a Media-Security Dialogue organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) on Thursday, November 27, 2025, DCOP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and the media. She highlighted the shared goal of promoting accountability and security. She also acknowledged past challenges in their relationship but expressed commitment to improving communication and cooperation.
“For the Ghana Police Service, our relationship with the media dates way back. The media has remained an important stakeholder, but our relationship has had some challenges, which makes this dialogue very important,” she reiterated.
The Ghana Police Service recognizes the media’s crucial role in sharing stories about their successes and failures, promoting transparency and accountability. DCOP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, saying it helps the police learn from mistakes and improve their services.
The dialogue, themed “Strengthening collaboration between the media and security agencies in Ghana,” aimed to address challenges and explore ways to enhance the police-media relationship. DCOP Ansah-Akrofi reiterated the police service’s commitment to building trust and fostering a stronger partnership with the media.
The dialogue also highlighted the Ghana Police Service’s recognition of the media as a key stakeholder in promoting security and accountability.
