The Northern Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has launched a new anti-crime taskforce, “Red Maria,” aimed at intensifying the fight against criminal activity, particularly in Tamale and its environs.

The initiative, announced by the Northern Regional Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, comes in the wake of growing concerns over a potential resurgence of crime following the withdrawal of the earlier “Black Maria” taskforce.

According to DCOP Lavoe, Red Maria has been mandated to clamp down on drug peddling, armed robbery, theft and other crimes that have persistently threatened public safety in the region. He noted that the new unit is already yielding results, with more than 35 suspects arrested within its first week of operations, most of them linked to drug-related offences.

“The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its duty to protect lives and property. ‘Red Maria’ has been strategically deployed to ensure that criminals have no safe haven in the Northern Region. We urge the public to support us with timely and credible information to sustain this fight,” DCOP Lavoe stated.

The introduction of Red Maria follows the departure of “Black Maria,” a special taskforce deployed by the Inspector-General of Police to curb rising crime in the Northern Region. While Black Maria recorded significant operational successes, including the arrest of hundreds of suspected drug dealers and the disruption of criminal networks, it also attracted criticism from sections of the public over alleged excessive use of force.

The withdrawal of Black Maria sparked mixed reactions across Tamale. Some residents welcomed the move, citing concerns over human rights and policing methods. Others, however, staged protests, calling for an extension of the taskforce’s mandate, arguing that its presence had significantly improved security and deterred criminal activity.

Security analysts suggest that the creation of Red Maria reflects a calculated effort by the Regional Police Command to maintain operational pressure on criminal elements while recalibrating its approach to law enforcement.

The timing of the new taskforce is particularly significant. In the immediate aftermath of Black Maria’s withdrawal, there were fears that criminal gangs, especially drug networks, could regroup and re-establish their operations. The swift deployment of Red Maria appears designed to prevent such a vacuum.

Early operations by the taskforce have included targeted raids on suspected criminal hideouts and intensified surveillance in known hotspots across Tamale. These actions signal a continuation of proactive policing, albeit under renewed leadership and possibly revised operational guidelines.

Beyond crime control, the establishment of Red Maria is widely seen as an attempt to rebuild and strengthen public trust in law enforcement. The controversies surrounding Black Maria highlighted the delicate balance between effective policing and respect for human rights.

Observers note that sustained success will depend not only on arrests and raids but also on transparency, accountability, and constructive engagement with residents.
