The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has ordered the country’s power distribution company, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), a strict 48-hour deadline to respond to mounting complaints over its prepaid metering system.

The directive was issued after a crunch meeting between the regulator and the power distributor, triggered by increasing public outcry over the unusually fast depletion of prepaid electricity units.

The utility services regulator again ordered management of the power distribution company to submit a comprehensive report detailing the cause of the problem and the corrective measures being implemented to address it.

Acting Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, speaking in an interview with the media, explained that the Commission’s primary concern is consumer protection.

“The consumer must be protected, safeguarded, and be able to have equal access to ECG, and that is the focus. ECG is supposed to work timeously to solve the problem,” he stated.

Dr. Suleman, while expressing optimism that ECG would comply within the stipulated period, cautioned that the regulator would not hesitate to invoke the necessary legal mechanisms if management of the power distributor fails to act swiftly.
