The Minister of Roads, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that all projects under the “Big Push initiative” will be carried out within the framework of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy.
“Under the Big Push, all the projects are going to be done under a 24-hour economy. Day and night, they have to work,” he said.
Mr Agbodza made the remarks at a sod-cutting ceremony for the Big Push project in Ho in the Volta Region, where he expressed confidence that the selected contractors could complete the works within the scheduled timeframe.
He cited the Atimpoku-to-Aflao road as an example, saying: “We are very convinced that the selection of contractors that will work on this road can complete it within 24 months. The section we are cutting the sod for belongs to First Sky, and I can tell you they can finish it in less than 24 months.”
The Minister challenged local contractors to prove their ability to deliver quality infrastructure, urging them to take out comprehensive insurance policies to guarantee the projects. He warned that shoddy work would not be tolerated.
Mr Agbodza also encouraged contractors to employ young graduates in engineering, quantity surveying and project management to fast-track construction while creating jobs.
The Volta Region project covers nine lots stretching 177 kilometres from Atimpoku through Asikuma, Ho, Kpetoe, Ave Afiadenyigba and Penyi to Aflao, with a proposed bypass along the Aflao beach to the border. It is being executed by First Sky Limited and eight other contractors.
Works include road widening, pavement strengthening, asphalt surfacing, replacement of weak culverts and the introduction of safety measures.
The Big Push Initiative, comprising 42 road projects nationwide, was officially launched by President Mahama at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Government has allocated GH¢13.85 billion (US$892.9 million) for the programme.
