Stakeholders have called for greater prioritisation of women in communities to promote inclusive development and equal opportunities. The call was made during a programme dubbed “Her Voice”, organised by the Women’s Commissioner of the Students of Geography Association at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to empower young women to speak up, build confidence and take on leadership roles.

Speakers during a panel discussion emphasised that empowering women contributes significantly to the growth of families, communities and the nation.

The Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Felicity Ahafianyo, shared her personal journey of perseverance in pursuing a career in meteorology despite early challenges in continuing her education. She said persistence and determination were key factors that helped her overcome obstacles and build a successful career.

A lecturer at the Department of Geography Education at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Kate Gyasi, also encouraged young women not to allow societal expectations to limit their potential. She noted that empowering women goes beyond individual success and has a positive impact on families, communities and national development.

A representative of InspireChange International (ICI), Ewuradwoa Erbynn, urged young women to remain determined and confident in pursuing their academic and professional goals despite challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Professor Esther Danso, also highlighted the importance of support from families and communities in shaping the ambitions of young girls. She encouraged parents, particularly mothers, to prioritise the education of their daughters and provide them with equal opportunities to succeed.

Participants also used the platform to discuss challenges young women face, including relationships, self-confidence and the responsible use of social media.

Panelists advised the students to believe in themselves, remain focused on their education and continue striving to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

The programme brought together professionals from academia, industry and entrepreneurship who shared their experiences and encouraged female students to pursue their ambitions.
