The Ghanaian Cedi was valued at 10.86 to 1 United States Dollar as of Monday, March 16, 2026, according to the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

BoG data showed that the Cedi was buying at 10.8671 to the dollar and selling at 10.8779. The British pound sterling was buying at 14.3804 and selling at 14.3959, while the euro was buying at 12.4301 and selling at 12.4413.

On the interbank market, the Cedi traded at GH¢10.88 to the dollar in January 2026, compared with GH¢10.45 at the end of December 2025, representing a depreciation of about 4 per cent. The currency also weakened against other major currencies, losing 4.9 per cent to the pound and 4.1 per cent to the euro. During the period, it traded at GH¢14.77 to the pound and GH¢12.80 to the euro.

Across foreign exchange segments, the Cedi showed mixed performance over the past two weeks. In the retail market, it exchanged at around GH¢12.00 to the dollar amid continued demand pressures. The dollar traded in a narrow band, slipping modestly against the Cedi from GH¢11.90 to GH¢12.15, while the pound and euro strengthened, closing at approximately GH¢16.30 and GH¢14.20 respectively.

Analysts say the January depreciation reflects seasonal foreign exchange demand, typical portfolio adjustments at the start of the year, and the Cedi’s sensitivity to global financial conditions. Despite this, the decline is modest compared with the significant gains recorded in 2025.

Last year, after early-year losses, the Cedi appreciated by about 43 per cent against the dollar by May 2025, supported by stronger investor confidence, higher foreign exchange inflows, and tighter policy coordination.

The start of 2026, however, has seen the Cedi lose ground once again against major global currencies, according to the Bank of Ghana’s Economic and Financial Data for January.
