Ghana’s Government says it will engage the Burkina Faso authorities over the decision to ban the export of fresh tomatoes.

The decision to engage “follows Burkina Faso’s directive suspending the export of fresh tomatoes, which took effect on March 16, 2026,” a statement issued by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry said on Friday.

It said the engagement would seek to address concerns surrounding the ban and chart a mutually beneficial way forward for both countries.

Ghana had committed to also working with stakeholders to boost local tomato production under the ‘Feed Ghana’ and ‘Feed the Industry’ programmes the Government is undertaking.

The programmes aim to increase output to meet demand on the domestic market.

“We are calling on tomato traders to remain calm as efforts are underway to secure an amicable resolution,” the statement said.
