A delegation from the Ministry of Defence, led by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has briefed the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs and National Security on steps being taken to enhance national security following the recent terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso.
The attack claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians and left three others injured. Addressing the Committee, the Deputy Minister disclosed that two Forward Operating Bases at Jirapa and Hamile are ready and will soon become fully operational to reinforce security along Ghana’s northern borders.
He added that surveillance has been intensified along key border corridors to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Brogya Genfi further announced that Government has approved the deployment of Defence Attachés to six high-risk countries, namely Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran and Libya. The move, he explained, is to strengthen the protection of Ghanaians living and working abroad.
He noted that Ghana is also collaborating with Burkinabe authorities through targeted training programmes aimed at improving escort duties and enhancing security operations.
As part of the broader strategy, selected security personnel will undergo specialised academic and intelligence-based training at designated centres, with a focus on escort operations.
The Deputy Minister stressed that the measures form part of comprehensive efforts to safeguard Ghanaian citizens both within the country and beyond its borders.
Members of the delegation included the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Kartey; Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Livinus Bessing; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Stephen Woseadzipko Kweku Parbey; Director of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Colonel Ernestina Assan; and Director of Finance and Administration, Madam Adwoa Assan.
