The Ga West Municipal Education Directorate has commemorated Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary with a colourful Kiddie March celebration.
A total of thirty schools, comprising both private and public institutions, participated in the event. Learners from the lower primary showcased impressive drills, choreography recitals, and other cultural performances, displaying discipline, creativity, and patriotism.
In an interview, the Ga West Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Victor Noye Tawiah, explained that the initiative was designed to give young learners the opportunity to actively participate in the Independence Day celebrations at the municipal level.
According to him, younger pupils are often left out of the main national events; therefore, the Directorate deemed it necessary to create a platform specifically for them.

“The programme is essentially to provide a platform for these young ones to participate in the Independence Anniversary celebration of the country, especially at the municipal level. Most often, when it comes to the main event, they are left out. We thought it wise to involve them so they can imbibe the spirit of patriotism, learn to love themselves, love their country, their neighbours, and society as a whole,” he stated.
Mr. Tawiah further reflected on Ghana’s journey since independence 69 years ago, noting that the country has made significant progress, particularly in the education sector.
He highlighted the evolution of Ghana’s educational curriculum over the years, explaining that it has undergone several revisions to align with global standards.
“If you look at the curriculum 69 years ago, it is different from what we have today. It has gone through several developmental stages and revisions. As a country, Ghana has consistently worked to ensure that our curriculum is in tune with global trends and tailored to meet the needs of 21st-century education,” he added.
Speaking on the Directorate’s future plans, Mr. Tawiah emphasized the importance of innovation and exposure for learners.
He noted that many pupils are often confined to their classrooms with limited opportunities to explore beyond their immediate environment. To address this, the Directorate is creating more platforms to expose learners to new experiences and interactions.
“We are working to introduce more innovative activities that will expose our learners to the outside world and new ways of doing things. These opportunities allow them to interact with learners from other schools, parts of the region, and across the country. It helps them build friendships, develop confidence, and learn how to relate with people from diverse backgrounds,” he explained.
He also mentioned that such events provide learners the rare opportunity to interact with leadership at the municipal and constituency levels, including the Member of Parliament (MP) and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), helping them better understand governance and leadership roles.
This year’s 69th Independence Anniversary celebration is under the theme:
“Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”
The Kiddie March celebration reflects Ga West’s commitment to nurturing patriotic, confident, and globally aware young citizens.
