The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akuffo Addo in collaboration with the UNFPA has launched a project to put girls who have dropped out of school mainly due to teenage pregnancy back in school while ensuring that those who are at risk of dropping out of school are supported to stay in school.

The ‘BECAUSE I WANT TO BE’, initiative is being piloted in nine coastal communities in the Greater Accra Region.

This follows a survey conducted by the UNFPA which revealed that poverty and some cultural practices in these coastal communities motivated the girls to rather give birth than go to school.

It also revealed that while some girls were desirous of going to school after child birth, there was no clear policy or plan for re-admission of girls into school after child birth.
