Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has boldly declared himself among the world’s elite defenders, even at age 33, following his one-year contract extension with the club.
The deal extends his stay beyond June’s expiry, securing the former captain through 2027 with an option for another year.
Maguire reflected on his turbulent journey since the blockbuster Leicester transfer, crediting adversity for his growth. Under Michael Carrick, his 2025-26 performances have propelled United’s Champions League push, silencing doubters.
“I still believe, even at my age, I’m arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes,” Maguire asserted. “I don’t think that’s in question really; that I can be really effective later on in games, whether you’re holding on to a lead or trying to chase a game.”
The Englishman embraced his trials: “I wouldn’t change where I’ve been and what I’ve been through. It’s definitely made me stronger.” His resurgence validates the extension amid United’s top-table charge.
