The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, has assured commuters that Metro Mass Transit buses currently undergoing repairs will be back on the roads within a matter of days.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy 99.7 FM during a discussion on Ghana’s transportation challenges, the minister responded to questions about when the buses, which the Minister of Transport directed to be fixed, would resume operations.
According to Mr. Kwakye-Ofosu, repair works on the buses are being fast-tracked to ensure they are deployed as quickly as possible to help ease the current transport difficulties being experienced across major cities.
“Oh, that should be on the road in a matter of days. Their repairs are being expedited,” he stated.
He explained that Metro Mass Transit operates as a corporate, profit-making entity, with established intercity and intracity routes. However, due to the ongoing transportation crisis, government has had to redirect some buses originally assigned to intercity routes to serve intracity transport needs.
Mr. Kwakye-Ofosu acknowledged that this temporary reallocation may pose operational challenges for Metro Mass Transit, particularly on its intercity services, but stressed that the decision was necessary under the circumstances.
“It may create a bit of a challenge for the operations of Metro Mass Transit in terms of their intercity routes, but it is necessary because of the crisis we have,” he said.
He added that the management of Metro Mass Transit has agreed to cooperate with government to ensure the situation is resolved and pressure on commuters is reduced.
The return of the buses is expected to provide relief to the public, especially amid concerns over transport availability and rising fares in urban centres.
