Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for improving its public image, calling the party a “sellable” and “marketable” brand.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Afenyo-Markin said in Ghana, voters care more about political party identity than individual candidates.
“When it comes to elections, people look at the party. The NDC is now a strong brand. That’s what people want,” he said.
He also talked about the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the party he belongs to, saying voters still remember its legacy and leaders like Kufuor, Busia, and President Akufo-Addo.
The MP recalled how, during his university days, it was hard for students to openly support the NDC. He said many people were afraid to be linked with the party at that time.
“But today, I must commend the NDC. They’ve worked hard to fix that image. On campuses, they’ve done outreach, and students now proudly say, ‘I am NDC,’” he added.
Afenyo-Markin noted that the NDC has also made gains among academics and professionals, including lawyers, areas once dominated by the NPP.
“The NDC saw the need to change and took steps. Now you see doctors and professors openly supporting them. That wasn’t common 20 years ago,” he said.
He urged his own party, the NPP, now in opposition, to learn from the NDC’s efforts and connect more with young people, professionals, and students.
“As Minority, we have to rebuild trust in the NPP. This will prepare us for a strong comeback in the 2028 elections,” he concluded.
He encouraged the party to start its rebranding now, saying, it is important to give Ghanaians confidence in the NPP once again.
