The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has cautioned the general public on dangers of an exposed or crushed fuel tankers and the safety measures individuals can take to prevent accidents.
This comes on the back of a tragic accident that occurred on February 14,2026 involving a fuel tanker on the Nsawam- Accra highway resulting in multiple casualties and injuries. The incident raised concerns about the safety of fuel tankers and the potential of such accidents to happen on busy highway
Speaking on the GBC Breakfast Show the Head of Communications Mrs. Rachel Naa Atswe Nee-Okpey, explained that the public should not be curious when accidents involving fuel tanks happen but rather they should run away
“Flee 1km from a crushed fuel tanker because fuel vapor can travel 1km as it’s heavier than air, one life is too many to lose to contaminated fuel, even if it is good fuel” she said
The Authority also indicated that although fuel tank drivers operating within the sector have been licensed they’re collaborating with law enforcement agencies to enable strict compliance of the regulations for tanker drivers.
