The contest for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary ticket in Ayawaso East has taken a new turn following the withdrawal of Abdul Salaam Daru from the race and his decision to support Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
The development occurred during the filing of nomination forms at the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the NDC, where five aspirants formally submitted their documents, despite an earlier list of six prospective contenders. Mr Daru, who had previously expressed interest in contesting the seat, opted to step aside after consultations with party officials and youth groups in the constituency.
Announcing his withdrawal, Mr Daru said his decision to back Hajia Amina Adam was based on their prior working relationship and his confidence in her ability to contribute meaningfully to the development of Ayawaso East. His move has been welcomed by sections of the party, who view it as a step towards strengthening internal unity ahead of the by-election.
The Ayawaso East seat became vacant following the death of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, prompting the Electoral Commission to schedule a by-election for 3 March 2026. The NDC has since activated its internal processes to select a candidate, with the vetting of aspirants scheduled for Wednesday, 28 January 2026.
Party officials say the outcome of the primaries will be crucial as the NDC seeks to retain the seat in the upcoming by-election.
