Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for unity, discipline and renewed engagement within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Describing the win as a collective achievement, the newly elected Falgbearer of the the oppositon New Partriotic Party said the victory must be transformed into electoral success in 2028.
Addressing party executives, delegates and supporters after the polls, Dr Bawumia said the contest, though hard-fought, was necessary for strengthening the party.
He stressed that success within the NPP required resilience, sacrifice and hard work.
“To secure anything precious in this life, we must be prepared to fight the hard battles, prepared to work hard and be prepared to withstand difficult circumstances,” he said.
“Tonight, victory is for all of us. I am grateful. The NPP is grateful to you all, and Ghana is grateful” Dr Bamumia said.
Dr Bawumia secured 110,643 votes out of 195,901 valid votes cast representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast to give him a clear majority in the nationwide primary.
Former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong, who polled 36,303 votes. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fourth and fifth respectively.

The newly elected flagbearer, Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to party delegates, election officials, security agencies and the media for their roles in ensuring a credible process, noting that the primary reflected the NPP’s long-standing commitment to internal democracy.
He urged all members to respect the outcome, regardless of their preferred candidates.
“It matters not which side you supported; winners and those who didn’t win at this particular time, we are in this together,” he said.
He further cautioned against conditional loyalty to the party, warning that unity must not be undermined by personal preferences or factional interests, and called on members to embrace cooperation as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
