Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised world-class development for Ghana if elected president. He argues that his record as Vice President—especially his focus on innovation and technological advancement—proves this goal is achievable.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted key government achievements like the Ghana Card and Mobile Money Interoperability as major strides in digital transformation, noting that the Ghana Card puts Ghana ahead of many developed nations, including the UK, which is now considering a similar system.
He made these remarks when he wrapped up his campaign tour of the Bono East Region, where he visited all eleven constituencies.
On digital finance, Dr. Bawumia noted that Ghana has made history as the first African country to successfully implement the Mobile Money Interoperability platform, an innovation that has transformed how financial transactions are conducted nationwide.
“Mobile money accounts have grown from 8 million to 24 million, and the number of agents has increased from 107 thousand to about 900 thousand because of the interoperability system,” he stressed.
Dr. Bawumia also referenced the success of the Zipline drone delivery system, describing Ghana as a global leader in medical drone services, with countries like the United Kingdom now working to emulate the initiative.
Outlining his vision, Dr. Bawumia stated, “That is why I say, when you vote for me, I will bring world-class development. You can believe me because what I have done as Vice President shows that I will do even more as President.”
He added that ongoing digital reforms in the health sector, including the ability to renew National Health Insurance cards electronically, were part of his broader commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians.
Meanwhile, former Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and MP for Techiman South, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the most viable candidate to lead the party to victory in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates in Techiman North during Dr. Bawumia’s tour of the Bono East Region, Mr. Mensah Korsah said the NPP cannot afford to gamble with its choice of flagbearer at a time when the party is determined to return to power.
“If we want to experiment, then we can choose someone else — but we cannot afford to miss the opportunity to win in 2028,” he said. “If you take out President Mahama, the next most popular politician in Ghana is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”
The Techiman South MP argued that Dr. Bawumia is already well-known and widely accepted across the country, making him the most marketable option for the NPP.
“Since we began this tour, I have seen at least five billboards of Dr. Bawumia in every town. He has already been marketed. Why should we overlook that, especially when we are in opposition and may face financial constraints?” he asked.
Mr. Mensah Korsah emphasized that the choice of flagbearer should be based on who can win the national election, not who has served longest in the party.
“The 2028 election is not about longevity but about who can win,” he stressed, urging delegates in Techiman North to deliver an even stronger endorsement than Techiman South, which gave Dr. Bawumia his highest vote share in the 2023 primaries.
He concluded by appealing to delegates to “vote massively” for Dr. Bawumia to ensure the NPP remains competitive going into the 2028 polls.
The final leg of the tour took Dr. Bawumia to Techiman North and South, where he interacted with party delegates and supporters.
