EC refuses to accept responsibility for violence at registration centers

The Electoral Commission (EC), has described as unacceptable, accusations that it is responsible for the violence that has characterised some registration centers in recent times.

Addressing the Media at the ‘Let The Citizen Know’ Series in Accra, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey said they are not responsible for providing security at registration centers but the Police.

He said the Commission will continue to liaise with the Police to ensure safety of all at the centers.

Mr. Tettey appealed to political parties to stop busing voter applicants to registration centres. To him, the phenomenon is the cause of the violence that has characterized the registration.

He said the EC has so far registered close to ten million voters onto the Voter register,

Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah said 98 percent of the registration centers are adhering to the COVID-19 protocols which have resulted in a drastic reduction overcrowding at the centers.
