The Minority in Parliament led by Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using the anti-LGBTQ+ law as a tool for power. The minority claims the NDC in government have gone quiet on the issue.
Afenyo-Markin criticized the ruling government for previously advocating for the law to protect Ghanaian culture and religious beliefs, only to distance themselves from it one year in office.
“When they were in opposition, they told the whole world that there was a need to pass an anti-lgbt law, to protect our own culture and religious beliefs. They were loud on the streets of Accra, one year down the line, they have gone quiet”, he said.
Speaking during a press conference held in Accra today, Monday, January 26, 2026, Afenyo-Markin questioned the NDC’s sudden change of heart. Pointing out their previous vocal support for the anti- LGBTQ+ law, Afenyo Markin highlighted the introduction of “promotion of sexual rights” in school curricula, which the ruling government attributed to a mistake.
“They found space in the curriculum of our children to introduce the promotion of sexual rights. When they were exposed, they said it was a mistake, an anomaly, we don’t accept this. We hold the view that, the NDC used anti-LGBTQ+ law to gain power but wants to find a way of running away from it. We insist that, they act by their own principle”, he noted.
