Mass Action Committee, a group in favour of a new voters’ register, has rubbished claims by the Inter Party Against a New Voters Register (IPRAN), that the Biometric Verification machine is not obsolete and does not require replacement.

He said documents cited by the group are indicative that there has been correspondence between the EC and vendors, which points to the fact that the  machines have reached an end of life and need to be replaced.

Addressing a news conference in Accra Tuesday, March 3, a member of IPRAN and General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said in a January 2, 2020, correspondence, Mr Marcel Boogaard of HSB Identification BV also indicated that although the notebooks (computer operating system and software) of the current BVRs needed to be upgraded, components such as “the fingerprint scanners were very robust and fit for use”.

But speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, ‘Behind the News’, Executive Director of Mass Action Committee, Atik Mohammed, said the group believes having a credible register is a prelude to successful polls.
