The Director General of the Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, has clarified that President John Dramani Mahama never mentioned the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo when he spoke about judicial reforms.
Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints show on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Mr Amaliba said the President’s comments on reforms were taken out of context by some critics who linked them to the Chief Justice’s removal.
“President Mahama never spoke about removing the Chief Justice. His remarks were about judicial reforms and came after several rulings from the Supreme Court, but they had nothing to do with her removal,” he stressed.
Mr Amaliba added that the process that led to the removal of the Chief Justice was constitutional and should not be seen as political interference. According to him, Article 146, which governs the removal of a Chief Justice, has been applied in similar cases in the past and must be respected.
He further urged Ghanaians to focus on learning lessons from the development rather than lowering accountability standards for certain public officials.
