Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has announced his intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship position in the upcoming internal elections.
Mr Afoko, who was elected NPP National Chairman in April 2014, said his decision followed “extensive reflection and encouragement” from party members and supporters calling for renewed leadership rooted in the party’s founding values and democratic ideals.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said his commitment to the NPP “has remained steadfast through the years,” adding that “the time has come to contribute once again to the rebuilding and strengthening of our party at this critical juncture.”
During his earlier tenure, Mr Afoko advocated internal reforms and greater transparency within the party before he was suspended in 2015 over what the party described as “conduct inconsistent with the NPP’s constitution.” The decision, taken by the party’s National Executive Committee, was later upheld by the National Council — a move Mr Afoko challenged in court.
He stressed that his current focus is on unity and progress, saying: “My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future — one where our party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”
Mr Afoko said he would in the coming weeks engage with party members and the media to share his vision, ideas, and plans to lead the NPP “with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose”.
“Let us look ahead together, God bless the NPP. God bless our dear country,” he concluded.
