President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with the prestigious International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, in recognition of his global leadership and commitment to democratic governance.
The award, the Council’s highest distinction, is presented periodically to outstanding international figures whose work advances peace, freedom, and lasting impact on world affairs. Instituted in 1973, it celebrates leaders who have demonstrated exceptional influence on the global stage.
President Mahama becomes the first African leader to receive the top honour since its inception, marking a significant milestone for Ghana and the continent at large.
Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, March 27, 2026, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, commended President Mahama for exemplifying the core values of the award. She highlighted his steadfast democratic leadership, commitment to strengthening international partnerships, promotion of peaceful political transitions, and advocacy for economic growth and regional stability.

Ms. Swartz further noted President Mahama’s consistent voice on global platforms, championing Africa’s development and positioning the continent as a key player in international affairs.
In his acceptance address, President Mahama attributed his dedication to global peace and development to the enduring legacy of Africa’s founding leaders, including Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, and Zambia’s Kenneth Kaunda.

The President noted that their vision and sacrifices continue to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to unity, justice, and sustainable development across the continent and beyond.
