The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of attempting to undermine the independence of the judiciary by suspending the Chief Justice.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Mr Kodua described the suspension as “reckless and politically motivated,” adding that it is the first time in Ghana’s history that a sitting Chief Justice has been removed in such a manner.
“This disgraceful act is a direct attempt to cripple judicial independence and bend the course of justice to serve the agenda of the ruling party,” he said. “Indeed, it is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation of our democracy.”
He also expressed concern over recent rulings by some courts, which he described as questionable.
“We are not surprised by the recent pronouncements of some courts. We live in this country and see what is happening. Some of the judgments being delivered are highly questionable,” he stated.
Mr Kodua further alleged that the government’s actions are part of a wider plan to control the judiciary.
“It is a well-orchestrated attempt by this government to exert undue influence over our judicial system, and by extension, our democracy,” he stressed.
He called on members of the judiciary to uphold their oath of office and resist political interference.
“They should not allow political parties, particularly the government of the day, to dictate how they administer justice,” he urged.
“You swore an oath of office to protect fundamental human rights and safeguard our Constitution. We call on you to stand by it, abide by it, and not allow political actors to influence your judgments,” he added.
